Principle of Forest School


Forest School is a long-term process of frequent and regular sessions in a woodland or natural environment, rather than a one-off visit. Planning, adaptation, observations and reviewing are integral elements of Forest School.

For every child involved in our forest school clear boundaries are set, and then carefully planned and regular sessions ensure that learning, and all the benefits of education in a natural environment can be achieved. All experiences are reinforced by regular reviews.


Forest School takes place in a woodland or natural wooded environment to support the development of a relationship between the learner and the natural world.

Pennies Forest School uses a large, forested area, offering all the benefits required to foster the all- important relationship between children and the natural world. We focus on understanding the way such an area provides a range of learning opportunities, including managing our use of the abundant space to ensure it thrives as a natural environment.


Forest School aims to promote the holistic development of all those involved, fostering resilient, confident, independent and creative learners.

From our very first day Pennies Day Nurseries set out to provide “The very best in childcare, learning and fun”. This aim and Principle 3 of the Forest School Association’s principles for good practice are in harmony. We work to make children’s experiences personal and positive, so they get “The very best”.


Forest School offers learners the opportunity to take supported risks appropriate to the environment and to themselves.

A properly supported risk is an adventure from which children learn and gain a sense of achievement. All activities are risk assessed, all safety procedures are explained, and care is taken at every stage to ensure everyone is protected. The large working area available to us also ensures a wide range of opportunities to take supported risks is available.


Forest School is run by qualified Forest School practitioners who continuously maintain and develop their professional practice.

Pennies is a childcare company with decades of experience of managing children in a range of environments, continuous development of professional skills for staff in all areas of our company is central to our professional practice. Our forest school is run by qualified practitioners and our policies are available for inspection. These pages, our website, and the opportunity for you to discuss specific details of forest school directly with front-line staff and those managing them are all part of our commitment to maintain the quality that informs principle 5 of the Forest School Association’s code.


Forest School uses a range of learner-centred processes to create a community for development and learning.
